Heavy and hard-hitting, rock band Dark Below brings intense energy in their music and live performances while providing rhythmic songs that people can sing along to. Formed in Columbia, MO, the band’s sound is influenced by Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, and 10 Years. After playing the local and regional circuit to build a following, they signed
with Nashville based JPS Productions. The current lineup has been together since 2016 and includes Josh Campbell (Guitar/Vocals), Josh Grove (Bass/Backing Vocals), and Quin Koldan (Drums). The band has released their new single “Make Believe”; now available on all streaming services. They have once again teamed with award-winning producer
Malcolm Springer (Matchbox 20, Collective Soul, Fear Factory, Josey Scott) and Jason Schrick of JPS Productions on the recording.
The band’s Josh Campbell says “Make Believe’ is a song about the power of imagination. I grew up without any siblings and spent a lot of time on my own - so I think it was kind of natural for me to become a really imaginative person. What I learned is that your imagination has the ability to bring you out of really dark places... But it also has the ability to put you back there, if you aren't careful.” The video for “Make Believe” was filmed by Tyler Gramke of Tygr Creative at Rose Music Hall in the band’s home town of Columbia, MO. Campbell explains “We've played a lot of shows at Rose over the last couple of years. We ended up doing two different shoots - one was just us playing along to the song and recording the video and the other was actual footage of us playing the song live a couple of weeks later. We love the energy we get from our hometown fans, and we feed it back to them”. Dark Below came together from a Craigslist post that Josh Campbell made in search of musicians for a hard rock band. Josh Grove was friends with the band members and was hanging out a rehearsal one day. Grove was a guitarist – but after hearing Campbell and the original drummer talking about needing a bass player, he volunteered to give it a go.
Campbell says “I didn’t really want to sing originally but we couldn’t find anyone, so with me singing and playing guitar, Grove on bass, and the original drummer we started playing shows in the Columbia area”. After the original drummer left the band, Quin Koldan joined in 2016 to solidify the current lineup. The band vaulted onto the national scene with the release of ‘Tense’ in July of 2022, and the track made it into the Top 25 of the Secondary Market Active Rock chart. They wrapped the year with the groove-heavy track, “Hate Being Human’ that made it into the Top 20 at Rock radio and was featured on Apple Music Breaking Hard Rock, Loudwire’s Spotify Weekly Wire playlist, and Pandora’s New Rock Now. The band has previously released their self-titled EP in 2017, and the single “Halo” in 2019. They have toured for the past 5 years, opening for Buckcherry, Saliva, Pop Evil, Smile Empty Soul, The Veer Union, and more. A new full-length album is being recorded for a TBA fall 2023 release, with all tracks produced by Schrick and Springer. The band is set to tour with former Saving Abel front man Scotty Austin starting in September.
